Jeremy and I started Walton Mountain K-9 Camp in 2005. Our wish was to have an alternative to "kennel boarding", to offer a fun place for dogs to come while their owners were on vacation. To set new standards for the dog boarding industry of WV. It should be never good enough for dogs to just be maintained and feed. As a trainer and behaviorist I knew well the effects that a traumatic boarding experience could have on a dog. Our Camp is not for every dog and every dog is not for our camp.... we are very selective about our campers so that we can assure a fun time for all. Dogs are pack animals that do not want to be alone or confined all day. They live in the day, starting each new day, willing and trusting in us as people. All they ask is to be treated with kindness. It is not hard, nor does it take much effort to make them happy. We set out to design a facility that was not the biggest or the fanciest but what a dog would want. A place surrounded by nature that was more like a camp than a kennel. Somewhere that did not in any way trigger a bad memory but a place that they would want to be.
Jeremy and I personally care for every dog at camp, we develop a relationship and bond with them. We get to know what they like, how they play and what they enjoy most.
After 5 years and many happy campers, we are still blessed with the BEST JOB EVER !!! We may not have much down time and we may only get a partial day off and very few vacations but how could we ever complain...... We get to play, snuggle and take peaceful walks with doggies all day ! What could be better than that ?
